Tofu’s problems look “fixed” most of the time, but they’re not. They’re lessening, and whatever’s left over is manageable.
Earlier this week when the power was out, we were waiting in line for the only working elevator in our condo. With one poor person between us, there was a dog reacting towards Tofu with the owner also yelling at the dog to sit while he was reacting. She held her sit-stay without any issues. Even the food delivery guy in front of us us in line complimented how she kept calm in that situation. That’s her norm with most dogs these days.
BUT today she saw one of the neighbourhood’s most reactive dogs, deciding to bark and lunge before he did. He was so freaked out by Tofu’s outburst that he went behind his owner instead of hanging at the end of the leash with two paws in the air barking. Tofu’s outburst just got her the result she probably wanted 🤦♀️
I had gotten so used to her lack of reactivity on the walk that I stopped paying attention to the warning signs that in hindsight were so obviously present before she reacted.
That reminded me today that she’s not “fixed” from her training, and can easily slip back into old habits if I allow them to. Together we’re sometimes a little bit of a hot mess just doing our best. We’re far from perfect, but headed in the right direction.
